Onizuka Air Force **Base**

Yeah, this seems silly to post, but I’ve gotten so many comments from people about my “misnaming” of the base. I know between the name “Sunnyvale Air Force Station” and “Onizuka Air Station” there were at least two other names: Air Force Base and Air Force Station.

This gentleman’s picture (shamelessly pilfered from FB) clearly shows a time when the base was listed as an “Air Force Base.” The time period is not wholly relevant to this post (er, the mid-1980s? πŸ˜‰ but I wanted to show some evidentiary proof.

As you all know, I’m all about the documentation.

  1. I was stationed there 1988-92. Going back at least as far as the 1970s, the installation was named Sunnyvale Air Force Station until autumn of 1986 when it was renamed Onizuka AFB in memory of the late astronaut. Somewhere in the early 1990s, it’s status was “downgraded” from Onizuka AFB to Onizuka AFS until it finally was closed around 2012.
