I was blessed to be home in Albuquerque (NM) on October 14, 2023 to see the Annular Solar Eclipse. Like any space geek, a ordered a “sun shield” cap for my telescope so I could view the sun’s surface. I also purchased a few of the solar eclipse glasses for my children, so they wouldn’t try to view through the telescope (yeah, I’m *that* serious about astronomy).
After seeing enough warnings about using an optical telescope to burn out my eyes (aka “eclipse blindness”; retinal burns; solar retinopathy) I decided to use my DSLR camera to take images of the eclipse:
200+ images were strung together to make this 1990s-era animated GIF. Try not to have a stroke with the flashing of the image – couldn’t be helped with the equipment I had.
And yes, if you’re going to ask… I did play Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” as it was happening.
